Welcome to the Telefrancais WikiEdit

Téléfrançais was a French language children's television show, produced by TVOntario from 1984 until 1986. The series of 30 ten-minute episodes has become a popular teaching tool, and is used by many educators (especially in Canadian schools) to teach French as a second language to elementary school children. The show's name is a portmanteau for télévision and français. The show follows the adventures of two children named Jacques (Jacques Dell) and Sophie (Colombe Demers), and Ananas (voiced by René Lemieux), a talking pineapple who resides in a junkyard. Other recurring characters are Pilote, Ginette, the Annonceur, Monsieur Pourquoi (le Superdétective), Louis Questionneur, Brigitte Banane, and the comic skeletal musical group Les Squelettes. The programs were produced by Jennifer Lawrance and directed by David Moore. The catchy theme and all of Les Squelettes' songs were written by the team of Bruce Ley and Jed MacKay. All the characters and scripts were created by Ken Sobol.

Téléfrançais ReceptionEdit

Téléfrançais was praised as being "formidable, exceptionnel, excellent, sensationnel, merveilleux, magnifique and fantastique" from critics around the world. The ratings on the first season were through the roof as more people were watching Téléfrançais than Coronation Street. However in the second season, Canadian children started to notice a familiar trend in the show where Ananas would always act like a creep and the skeletons would always sing songs. People also got tired of the constant repeating of words as if the children were idiots. Famous critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had this to say: "The second season of Téléfrançais is a lot less fantastique than the first." Due to its repetition, the ratings plummeted and the show was cancelled. However, fans did praise Russell Crowe's stunning performance of "I AM UN ANANA" on the series finale.
